I went back to Air Traffic Control in Oxnard, Ca in 1969. After Antigua he went to Jupiter, then Grand Bahama and after that closed, he went back Jupiter at the Jonathan Dickinson Missile Tracking Annex (JDMTA). My dad really enjoyed the work and the people he worked with on the islands upand down the Eastern Test Range. Comments: It was fifty years this month when my new bride of 6 month that we packed all of our belongings in the rear seat of our 1957 Ford and headed for Cocoa, Florida.Two days before I reported to go to work for RCA (on Jan 14, 1956) we checked into the Brevard Hotel until we could get settled into anew "home". Comments: My dad Jack Ledbetter worked for ITT (I think) around 1966 on the Vanguard. THE OLD PAN AM MAILROOM STILL THERE, THO LOOKING UNUSED.On Antigua, I worked with the computer programmer Preston Mullen who piqued my interest in Computer Science and I ended up using the GI Bill to get a BS and MS in Computer Science, later working in Silicon Valley for IBM and HP. Comments: I was hired by RCA for the Apollo project and assigned to the Vanguard; but when RCA lost the Apollo project I was transferred to the ARIS ship USNS H. Arnold and I was on it from 1965 to 1967 when I transfer to Grand Turk. TDY duty: GBI, pad 17, Timing Shop, Twin Falls Victory, Coastal Sentry, Antigua. Discovered the Pacific Northwest when the Vandy had an extended port period in Portland, Oregon. I retired from the US Army Corps of Engineers in 2001.After my 45 went off by accident, was assigned to parts supply (GBI), I think the only air conditioned facility on the range.I'm going to write a story for my web page specifically on the sinking incident. A couple of weeks ago Tom Mc Call RCA/GE/CSR Communications Downrange and Cape Canaveral AFS, Communications Test Operations Analyst passed away. In the comm center where we ran Morse code traffic to other station and ships, did some air traffic control, handled some classified documents and played with Sammy the meanest tom cat that ever lived.

After my duty there, I became a Range Rat for RCA, and operated and then supervised the radar tracking watches on Antigua and Ascension Islands. Found a note from Benny Juhl, I worked with him on ORV's. Wish I could come to the next RR get together but the commute from WA is more than I can handle. Would be interested in hearing from anybody who had passed by my way in the past. Bill Bailey Comments: I worked on GBI and Walkers Cay in the late 50's. My dad (Gen USAF, same name)had lied about my age and gotten me a summer job on the range. I worked for some time for a contractor who delivered supplies to various tracking stations.After sinking went to for work for Pan Am as a security guard.I ws working one of the consoles in what was then Central Control, and witnessed the explosion on closed circuit TV. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then. I have worked at Ascension Radars (1990-1992), Antigua Radar (2006-2010), Patrick Radar (2010-2014), Radar/Command Planner (2014-present).I would not trade my experiences and that career for anything, plus still happily married to the same wonderful love of my life. What a privilege to follow after the trail-blazers of the ER space program! Hope the future generations make you as proud of us as we are of you.
I have since returned only once (in 2005)and was so saddened by the condition not only of the base but also Hatchet Bay. from Doe Beadle, the wife of Dale Beadle that Dale has passed away...---------------so sorry to say my beloved husband, Dale Beadle, of 41 years died October 16, 2016. He would want all of his RANGE RAT friends to know.
