Rolling out all of his classics – Old School, Snake Eyes, the Chokeslam and a final Tombstone – Undertaker despatched 16-time world champion Cena in just four minutes, leaving fans stunned, bemused and feeling shortchanged at what had occurred.
Whether it is the start of a serious feud or not is uncertain, but given the emotional scenes after Undertaker’s supposed retirement at Wrestle Mania 33, the squash match is unlikely to be received well.
And that’s the very example multi-time former WWE Champion Triple H cited when he added: “It never ceases to amaze me that you come to any place in the world and walk down the street, and people know who you are.
There’s nowhere you can go in the world without being recognised as a WWE superstar.
Rousey’s critics questioned whether she would really look like a professional wrestler in the ring, but they clearly forgot that the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion is no show pony, but a physical specimen.
While that has drawn the ire of many with WWE being accused of hypocrisy, Levesque – who is both still an in-ring performer and company executive – told He said: “I understand that people are questioning it, but you have to understand that every culture is different and just because you don’t agree with a certain aspect of it, it doesn’t mean it’s not a relevant culture.
“You can’t dictate to a country or a religion about how they handle things but, having said that, WWE is at the forefront of a women’s evolution in the world and what you can’t do is affect change anywhere by staying away from it.
Not only did Rousey take the fight to Mc Mahon in ways that left the fans stunned – a Hurricanrana and flip-through pin to lift her over her own head the main highlights – but she also hoisted Triple H up onto her shoulders in a show of strength that channelled the likes of the late Chyna and Beth Phoenix.
In the end it was Rousey who deservedly secured victory, forcing Mc Mahon to tap-out to an armbar after Angle had seen off Triple H outside the ring.
The fact that White was ringside could easily be explained by Rousey’s debut, but it all seems a little coincidental in order to trigger a surprise finish to a fight that felt like it had already been seen three years ago.
